Wondering about the resumes for business plans or how you should include them? The resumes in a business plan are typically serving two purposes: (1) to be summarized by a writer for inclusion in the management section of the document, or (2) for inclusion in their complete form, typically in the appendix of the business plan. Depending on the depth of your background and experience or the number of people on your executive team, you might want to include the CVs in full in the body of the plan, though more often than not all you need to provide is a brief summary of each person's achievements and credentials. Particularly in the executive summary, a snapshot of each executive should suffice; never include a bio here. Beyond the resumes, make sure your plan explains:
• Why this is the team for this specific venture
• What about their track record will help the new business succeed
• Any recommendations or endorsements that might be relevant
• A list of advisory board members, if applicable
• A section outlining your consultants and advisors, if any
The business plan is more than just the background your team has, so don't think that resumes alone will win the day. While all investors concur that the people behind a concept matter to its success, they may still seek to install a CEO/COO from another venture to help protect their investment, so be open to disclosing management team gaps. Also, make sure that the business plan includes a full description of your product and service, the market for your business (industry trends, competition, buyers etc.), your marketing concepts, and a full pro forma showing the potential financial performance.
