Anatomy of a Business Plan:
Much like human anatomy, the anatomy of a business plan is not something that is left open to interpretation on what is accepted as correct. Every business plan must contain certain basic elements that break down your business for the reader to give a clear picture of what you striving to achieve and how you are going to accomplish that feat.
The basic anatomy of a business plan should be broken down into main sections of an executive summary, company overview and structure, marketing section, and financial projections. The executive summary is the first section, where you will break down your business to the simple facts: What product/service are you offering? How will it fulfill a need/demand? What tactic will you use to fill this need/demand? What amounts of funding are being sought and from where? These questions need to be answered in clear, direct answers so that the person reading your plan will want to continue reading about your business.
The company overview section will explain how your company is legally formed, the management behind it and the breakdown of employment. You will also need to include bios on yourself (as owner) and the management staff to show that you have some skills in the field you are entering know what you're doing. You will also need to explain your competitive advantage over other businesses offering the same product/service.
The marketing section is going to include information that shows there is a need for your product or service in your target demographic area. It will also explain how you will promote your business and your marketing strategies along with the pricing of your product/service.
The financials will need to be built out with several years' projections. These projections must include, annual revenue projections, profit and loss, start up costs, break even analysis and a balance sheet.
Writing a good business plan, covering each of these sections in depth and clearly will get you on your way to not only securing funding, but also having a solid business foundation.
