I enjoy starbucks. A double shot is the only thing that can get me going. The caffine per shot is higher then most coffies...that is why I like it. The thing is, anything that creates competition is naturally going to change demands and expectations of the market. Starbucks raised the bar a bit. Consumers wanted better variey, and a choice of what type of coffie...not just grabbing a cheap coffie from a gas station or what have you. It is a HUGE market becuase A LOT of people like coffie. Starbucks raised the bar. The smaller shops either make it or dont. Then, Starbucks raised their prices. All the smaller coffie shops that made it though the new coffie economy started to do better becuase they met the new consumers expectations with a better price. This will always happen. People like new, and people like change... It is not Starbucks, its humanity.

Man this article was informative and hilarious!!! I really enjoyed it. Words cannot describe how much I've learned and laughed when reading it. I wonder how Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Co's or larger corporations feel about this shared knowledge for "the common man". Perhaps their ready to jump ship and start their own buisness too. Mr. Howe, excellent Blog- believe me when I say that I'm not one, that is easily impressed. However, I would have given time from my day to be a fly at your table, sitting and watching you and the faces of investors as you engaged in frivolous conversation. I love your thought process, especially that you were able to narrow their thoughts down to one simple word thats always associated to risk..."fear".

Last night I was leaving work close to 7p & ran into another business owner who has a wine cellar in the basement of our office building. I teased him a bit about the smell of yeast all over the building; after my tease he asked if I'd like to see his grapes soaking… to which I eagerly replied yes! We chatted while he stirred his grapes. I took an eager interest in his wine making, then inner financial coach in me reared her head; I asked a series of questions about how it's "really" going. He shared candidly about his business as he stirred his precious grapes.

After about 10 minutes he said, "I know you have offices in this building too. What do you do?" I told him, and casually mentioned that we're starting the process of raising capital & that I too am trying to remain enthusiastic about the future of my endeavors. That's when he told me he's on a board of the local angel investor fund, and he asked if I'd like to come in and present. What?

Your blog reminded me of last night. Authenticity prevailed and opened a door I wasn’t even looking for as I visited the cellar in my office building.

Thanks for the comment Mahesh. However there is an additional wrinkle. Even if you are w-2 working for a company but use your own office, equipment, internet, car for work and are not reimbursed for it, you can itemize as non-reimbursed work expenses. In this case, 1099 / w-2 has no real difference other than you are paying your own FICA. Meaning, if you are working for me on a business plan as a W-2 employee at home, and I don't pay for your internet, you can absolutely write off the portion you use for work. Thanks for helping me clarify!
